[/u] Merlot is an avid reader of fiction. Mainly fantasy, her shelves are flooded by novels about vampires, faeries, and, her new favorite, witches. Merlot was introduced to reading at a young age by her mother who would read her a bedtime story every night. As she progressed and advanced through the reading levels, Merlot became a fan of Shakespeare. Unlike her brother (also a bibliophile), Merlot doesn’t guard her collection from others in fear that a page might crease. She encourages others to borrow her books and read them as well. To her, a pristine book is a sad one, one that was loved by few and not by many as a book should be.

LIKES !
LIKE TWO Merlot also has a passion for music. Passed down to her by her mother, Merlot received a flute for her seventh birthday. Ever since then she has played any kind of music she could find online for free. She joined her school band in middle school and became first chair. When she started at Magic School, Merlot began to watch movies and write her own versions of the scores by ear.
LIKE THREE Related to her love of reading, Merlot began writing her own stories and poems at a young age. She wrote several short stories and a few poems about her dreams and goals in life. She submitted these to her school newspaper and won the Editor’s Choice Award for best short story which, coincidentally, was about a girl discovering she had the power to generate electricity. Since then, Merlot has written several fanfictions based on her favorite stories and is even writing her very own story. It is about a young girl who, at one time, believed herself to be normal, but soon learns that she is a witch and must save the world from a terrible demon.
[/ul]DISLIKES !
DISLIKE TWO Merlot doesn’t like being treated like a child. She feels that she is intelligent enough to make her own decisions, especially at eighteen. Her parents suffocate her with rules and restrictions that, even though she knows they only do so because they care, are unreasonable and infuriating. When she attended her normal school, the teachers believed that every student needed to be told what to do and that no particular child was more advanced than another. Merlot knew this to be false and hated when she was babied.
DISLIKE THREE Merlot dislikes drama or, to be specific, people who thrive on drama. She has had plenty of experience dealing with those who are intent on being the center of attention and learned quickly that she can’t stand them. Even though she has always dreamed of being the center of attention, Merlot believes that anyone who so desperately needs it enough to start something unnecessary and potentially harmful to others deserves to be ignored. Merlot views her life as hectic enough without the added hassle of dealing with drama and its aftereffects. To her, drama is something that should be reserved for the theater.
[/ul]STRENGTHS !
STRENGTH TWO Merlot is exceptional at concocting potions. She follows instructions particularly well and knows little tricks that can make a potion stronger and more effective. She learned this skill from her father who, in his day, was a master potion maker. At first, Merlot believed that this skill would transfer over to everyday cooking of meals. To her surprise, it didn’t. With a little bit of instruction from her mother, Merlot’s cooking skills went from dismal to somewhat good.
[/ul]WEAKNESSES !
WEAKNESS TWO Another weakness of Merlot’s is the inability to trust others. In some ways, distrust can be an ally, but such severe distrust in those around her borders on dangerous. Merlot trusts her family, but hardly anyone else. Since the attack on the school, Merlot’s distrust has shifted into paranoia. She has become more introverted than before and doesn’t speak much to others around her.

Merlot was born to Howard and Charlene Sunderson on April 15 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She and her family lived in Minnesota for three years, during which life remained relatively normal or, really, as normal as life can be with witches in the house. Every now and then Merlot would witness a spell gone wrong or a potion mishap, but they soon became expected and didn’t really surprise anyone anymore.
The Sundersons moved to Carson City, Nevada where Mark began attending kindergarten. Soon after, Merlot also began attending. She made her first friend on the second day of school and easily surpassed the rest of her peers in most of the subjects. When she started first grade, Mark’s powers manifested and the family decided to move away for no reason other than boredom. Upset, Merlot said goodbye to her only friend and left behind Minnesota.
Merlot’s family took up residence in Sacramento, California. Mark and Merlot both adjusted well and, soon enough, Merlot had made new friends. She did well in school and earned certificates for good grades. She didn’t get into much trouble with her teachers or peers and even managed to keep the big secret of her family. At a young age she learned how to lie and cover up her brother’s slip-ups and even learned how to blackmail him into doing her chores.
When she reached middle school, Merlot became more interested in the arts and strayed away from her academic subjects. Her interest in making good grades slowly disappeared and she began focusing on her writing, music, and art. At this time her powers began to manifest and, much to her dismay, she was forced to leave her friends once more.
Merlot was bitter about attending Magic School. She wasn’t very outgoing and didn’t believe she would be able to make friends at a new school this late in her school career.
In her freshman year, the only year she attended the school with her brother, Merlot discovered her talent at Potion Making. She excelled in the subject and also did well in English/Lit. She wasn’t very socially involved with anything happening at the school and stayed under the radar.
Her sophomore and junior years were much the same. She did very little to stand out and preferred staying on her own than with others, though she watched events she would’ve loved to have been a part of from a distance.
Now that she has entered her senior year, Merlot has resolved to come out of her shell and attempt to better herself as a person through social exchanges. She hopes to actually make several friends and maybe even get a boyfriend this year. She is determined to get her grades up. She also believes that she isn’t quite motivated enough to accomplish all this, but figures she might as well try.
When she isn’t hanging out at home or with her friends, Merlot enjoys spending time at the library. During school hours when she has free time she can be found walking around aimlessly, whistling to herself.

“Merlot? You here, twerp?”
Merlot looked up from the television and smiled as her brother Mark walked into the living room. He came over to the sofa and fell down onto the cushion next to her, leaning his head back and letting out an exhausted sigh. Merlot observed him quietly, smiling wide. When he turned to face her, she laughed.
“Another hard day?” she questioned, turning the volume on the television down and pulling her legs up off the floor and onto the sofa.
“Like always. You’d think college would be easier than Magic School, wouldn’t you?” Mark asked. His eyes were closed and he was running his fingers through his thick black hair in frustration. Merlot was silent for a moment until she realized that the question wasn’t a rhetorical one and that he actually wanted an answer. She shrugged her shoulders and looked back over at the t.v.
“Not really. School is school. It’s always difficult. Besides, dad always says that life gets harder, not easier,” she replied, resting her chin on her knee. Mark reached over and ruffled her hair, laughing as she huffed angrily and threw his hand off.
“Thanks, twerp. That makes me feel a whole lot better.”
The two siblings stared at the television screen in silence, neither one of them saying anything else. Merlot began to absentmindedly pick at the upholstery, waiting for the conversation to officially end so that she could turn the volume back up.
Mark stood up and headed into the kitchen, presumably to raid the refrigerator once again. Merlot turned the volume up to its previous volume and smoothed her hair down. As an afterthought, she offered a sarcastic reply to his last statement.
“That’s what I’m here for! To make your life easier!”
