CHARACTER INFO:
Name: Carmine Vermillion
Age: 13
Birthdate: 9/13/1978
Year in School: Freshman
Type: Demon
Powers: Super Intelligence, Levitation, Aerokinesis
Affiliation: Neutral
DESCRIPTION:
Physical Description: Tiny and angular. Skinny as a rail. Carmine has piercing eyes; blue with a silver ring in the center, around the pupil. Her hair is long flowing and black, unlike Elle Fanning. Her skin has a healthy glow to it, and her face is most often alighted with a smile. Her eyelashes are long, and she constantly bats them, regardless of whether or not she intends to seem adorable to her unsuspecting victims. She blends in well with her new family, physically and mentally. Her positive personality shows through her sparkling eyes.
Carmine came to her adoptive family, skinny, shrunken, malnourished, and pale as a ghost. She filled out by the time puberty hit, and is at her appropriate weight and height. She is attractive in the extreme, and is seemingly unapproachable to many of her admirers, until she speaks. She is open, inclusive, friendly, and popular. This shines physically and smiles often, and this all shows well in her number of admirers. She is the shining star of her community.
Style: She isn't particular about her clothing, but tends to take on the casual end of every trend. She isn't one to go insane over a mall sale, or one to spend her money on ridiculously price designer jeans, though she could afford it.
Looks Like: Elle Fanning
Personality: She is a social butterfly in the non-magical world, and loves magic folk equally. She seems to fit in wherever she goes, because of her supernatural beauty. Her personality is winning, her smile, killer. She seems to bring a glow to every social situation, is always the life of the party, and the talk of the town. Nobody has dirt on her, but they all speak lovingly of the girl. Even those who resent her perfection seem to come to her side, eventually.
She was always a social person, and when she re-discovered the secret of her “talents”, she was simply thrilled. She had no way of knowing what awaited her in the magical world. Her non-magic family was accepting of her identity, and didn't get out much without her around. As a matter of fact, without the little wonder child, they didn't know what to do with themselves. She was constant in her flow of letters home, and only when she arrived at school, did she discover the sad past she had forgotten. But, even this did not dampen her spirits. She managed to keep smiling, and disguising the pain of her past behind her pretty eyes, but some of the more intuitive and understanding students could still read her true feelings.

History: Carmine's sad past came back to her in little bits and pieces. All of this fragmented information amounted to one unbroken chain of events, once she had filled in the blanks in her mind. Her life's time-line went something like this:
Born in France.
Beaten regularly by a drunken landlord, to far from help or intervention of the outside world to hope her screams would ever be heard. She lived with her twin sister; Amaranth, a silent specter of a child. Amaranth was the girl of the forest, the spirit of trees, the whisperer of ever ant and bird around them in the quiet French Countryside. The only sounds which punctured the relative calm of the twin's little forest world, were their own screams.
Their mother was submissive, in the face of the cruel “master”, and their sickly younger sister was helpless. Amaranth was always gone, alone in the woods, at one with nature, while Carmine was left to bear the burden of putting up with the cruelties of the landlord. She always did Amaranth's chores in her place, in order to spare her absentminded sister the beating that would come from chores left undone.
Carmine was the one who cared for her sickly sister, and compensated for her strained mother. Carmine was the first of the Vermillion daughter's to be raped by the landlord, but she closed her eyes and bore his weight. Her mother grew feeble from beatings, and a failed escape attempt.
Carmine's mother felt that she had let the girl's down, when she returned to find them black and blue from head to toe, and Carmine was the one who silently consoled her, while her younger sister whimpered in her mother's arms. Amaranth was gone then too, and it was then that the dam broke. Carmine's slow growing resentment towards her sister, always missing in action amounted to a plan, and Amaranth's chores were left undone one day, Carmine fed up.
But, when Amaranth was beaten senseless by the landlord, Carmine regretted her actions deeply, but never did apologize to Amaranth, and Amaranth never did thank Carmine for all of the other chores she had covered for her in. The thing died, and was left to rot in the back of their minds. When the landlord finally raped Indigo, Carmine finally fought back, though never showing the powers she had always hidden, even in the face of this dire situation.
She regretted her restraint forever. She lay beaten, and unable to call for help, and only Amaranth was uninjured. She sent mental distress calls to her sister, and her mingled thoughts of “Run” and “Come” were a confusing jumble, which still sent Amaranth running to the rescue. Amaranth murdered the landlord, and Carmine revived her mother. Then, they buried their younger sister in the French Countryside. Carmine and Amaranth lived briefly in the English slums, where their mother quickly faded and died of a broken heart.
Soon thereafter, the girls were discovered by a Magical Scout, assigned to their particular case, and were sent to live in a kind, yet painfully dissatisfying non-magic foster home. Eventually, the twins planned their escape, and flew off to the magic barrier, to be met with an invisible force-field, which sent them flying backwards in the night air, out of control. Amaranth, a skilled biker, managed to regain control of her flying vehicle, and come to a safe landing, while Carmine was not nearly as successful, and fell far, and lost her personal recollections, as well as nearly losing her life, but was discovered by a boy, who found her help, and became her adoptive brother.
Her family nursed her back to health, and entered her back into non-magic society. Carmine knew nothing of her own magic, until she received her magic school notice. This went over well with the family, because of their shared love and devotion, there was no trouble in communicating this, since they really held no secrets from one and other. After all, Carmine was just as puzzled by the notice as anyone.
Any Extra Information: Carmine was reunited with her past, and her twin sister in the magic school, and felt an immediate connection. As soon as they locked eyes, Carmine felt the weight of their past, their shared existence, flooding back to her, and was left humbled, but not saddened greatly by the experience. But, Amaranth felt that something was lost, some part of herself along the way.
Carmine's existence after all the years of mourning for a sister who was alive, well, and even better off than she was, was a strange revelation. But, Amaranth felt somewhat complete again in Carmine's presence, and pretended that there was not any time lost between them, even though Carmine could only feel her pain through the narrow window of her own imagination, and never would share the pain the way they had shared everything else. But, she was home.
Sample Writing:
“Hey, Carmine?”
“Yes?” Carmine replied, in her ready smiling way.
David seemed nervous. “Well, I just wanted to talk to you...in privacy.” He cleared his throat nervously.
Carmine nodded to Amaranth with an apologetic look. Amaranth disappeared without a word. Carmine sighed, knowing what would come next. He is going to ask me out. Oh, joy. She'd heard it too many times before, not just from David, but from millions of other guys, magical or non-magical, who loved her passionately. She grew weary of this constant stream of male admirers. She'd told too many “Sorry, but I'm not looking for a relationship right now.”, to feel even the normal conflicting emotions; she felt only a hallow ring where flattery should have come, and wanted so much to roll her eyes at him, though she knew she shouldn't, since that would be rude.
“What is it, David.”
She could feel his anticipation, and was almost pitying him, when he said, “I wanted to know if you'd go to the dance with me this Friday.”
A dance? That was new information, and he'd caught her off guard so that she had no time for pretense. “Really? A dance. Cool.”
He stood there, staring at her, not quite sure of what to make of her reaction. But, then she smiled, radiantly. David suppressed a gasp, as she did this, and she looked right at him; right into him, and said, “Sure, I'd love to go with you.”
He had to check to be sure he wasn't dreaming, or hearing things. When he found that he wasn't, he had to stop himself from jumping with joy. She had accepted him, and she was going to the dance with him on Friday. “Thanks.” He managed to say, before drifting off on a cloud of joy.
Carmine sighed, her own admission to the fact that she would indeed be going with this simple minded boy, a sweet boy she reminded herself, strictly, to the Friday Night Dance. As sweet as any boy may be, thoughts of school romance excited her little, if it did at all. She'd seen it all. She'd been asked out a million times, by a million guys, and this one was truly no different. There was always the same gap between their reality and her own, heightened existence.
She mourned the waste of her own intelligence on the simple peers. Her darling friends knew nothing of true love, true pain, true sacrifice. Theirs was a little world, full of games, chases, and drama. Hers was another dimension, regardless of how much she threw herself into the activities, and attempted to see eye to eye with them, to understand them. She did, and this was the trouble, she realized, at last. She understood them all too well, and yet, they could not ever begin to get her. She was one, or two, of a kind. A demon trapped inside a child's body. She would never amount physically, to what she was mentally, and neither would any aspect of the simple world around her. What she needed was mystery, something intangible, she needed something abstract for her to struggle with. Something that was enough to make her wonder. That was it; curiosity; that was what she was missing in life.
It's best not to dwell on things which can not be solved. More simple to her, was the meaning of life.
